How to Sleep Well Part 1

Can’t function properly because you haven’t had a good night’s sleep?

Need a bit of a helping hand to get to sleep at night?

Sleeping Beauty from her bedside brings you some more top tips on how to sleep well at night.

Have a hot bath at the right time
Having a hot bath is a relaxing thing to do but will it help you have a good night’s sleep? The main effect of having a hot bath is that it will raise your body temperature. But the trick is in the timing of when you have a hot bath and when you are planning to go to sleep. Try and have a hot bath an hour or two before you go to bed. After having a hot bath, your body temperature will rise and then gradually fall. As your body temperature drops, you will find yourself feeling sleepy. So experiment and see whether it makes a difference how early you have a bath before you go to sleep.

Exercise
Some people find that having a healthy dose of exercise helps them have a good night’s sleep. Exercise gets your blood flowing and works your body. However, exercising just before you are about to go to bed may not help you get a good night’s sleep. Try and exercise earlier in the day, in the morning or afternoon, but don’t exercise a couple of hours before you go to bed. Experiment with exercise during different times of the day and see whether it affects your ability to get to sleep.

Follow your natural body clock
Try and wake up at the same time each day and go to bed at the same time each night. Follow your body’s internal clock and try and develop a regular sleep cycle. Your body will thank you for it!

Get sunlight during the day
Try and get at least 30 minutes of sunlight every day. As well as a good habit for getting some Vitamin D into your body it also helps to set your biological clock. Try to catch some sunlight during the early morning as this is the best time in the day for suppressing melatonin.
