What are some good sleep habits to follow?
Sleeping Beauty from her bedside brings you some more top tips on how to sleep well at night.
Use your bedroom for sleep only
Use your bedroom for sleep only so that your body gets conditioned to know that going to the bedroom means sleep time. Try and make your bedroom as quiet as possible so that it is conducive to falling sleep. The important point here is that you want to form a strong association of the bedroom as a designated place for sleeping only and not other activities.
Get into some good sleep habits
As it gets closer to your sleep time, start to wind down and relax. Create your own rituals to get to sleep. These rituals should be relaxing ones to help you get in the right state to go to sleep. These rituals may be as simple as brushing your teeth, tucking the kids into bed, listening to soft music, reading a book, warming up or cooling down your bedroom, closing the blinds or curtains and getting the bedspreads ready.
Get yourself comfortable
As obvious as it may sound, it is important to make sure your bed is as comfortable as possible, including your mattress, bedsheets, quilt and the pillow you use. Get into your favourite sleeping position and sleep the night away. Develop some sleep rituals like reading a book, relaxation exercises before you hop into bed. Keep your bedroom clear of clutter. Your bedroom should be associated with getting a good night’s sleep. Avoid using your bedroom as a place where you engage in daytime activities ie. watching TV, using your computer, etc.
Set the temperature in your bedroom to a nice comfortable temperature. If noise bothers you, close the window to shut out traffic noise and other surrounding neighbourhood noises in your neighbourhood.
If you live in a high density area, it may be useful to have some earplugs by the bedside for noisy nights when your neighbours are partying on and you are trying to get some sleep.
If it is too bright in your bedroom, you may have trouble falling asleep. Close the window blinds or curtains so that you can sleep well.
