Avoid alcohol before you go to bed
Just like caffeine, it is best to stay away from alcohol before you go to sleep as it can disrupt your sleep. Alcohol may initially get you in a more relaxed mood but it can impact the quality of your sleep during the night. Some people find that alcohol seems to prevent you from getting into a deep sleep state. Others find that it results in disrupted sleep as it may cause you to wake up several times during the night.


Avoid drugs
Prescription drugs can affect your sleep in many different ways. It may prevent you from getting to sleep, it may disrupt your sleep during the night, or it may affect how many hours of sleep that you are able to get.

Check what effects the drugs that you are taking have on your body. Drugs may have various effects including impacts on your central nervous system, your cardiovascular system or your respiratory system.

Avoid nicotine
Nicotine found in cigarettes, cigars and pipes is a stimulant that will increase your heart rate and blood pressure, and affect your central nervous system. It is likely to disrupt your sleep during the night so best to avoid nicotine a couple of hours before you go to bed.

Avoid too much action on TV or hyped up music
One strategy to get a good night’s sleep is to start to wind down before you go to bed. Therefore, it is best to avoid stimulating your mind with action programs on TV or hyped up music that will give you an adrenaline rush. Try and engage in relaxing activities before you go to bed and make it become part of your daily sleep ritual.
